Gabrielle Bonheur Chanel born August 19 1883. Saumur, France her early life was not a glamourous lifestyle. At age 12 her mother passed away her father sent her off to an orphanage who was also working as a peddler.
Chanel was raised by nuns who taught her sewing skills and embroidery which led to her later success in the fashion industry.
At the age 20 chanel became involved with Etienne Balsan, who helped her built a millinery business. She later left him and moved on with his wealthier friends, Arthur “Boy” Capel. Both men have had a huge impact on her fashion career.
Her first shop was in Paris Rue in 1910 selling hats first later making clothes.
